Eco Energy Plan at Historic Mill

Posted on Monday, 03 October 2011 01:40PM by Judy and the Peakdistrict Online Team
Eco campaigners have revealed plans to generate green energy at an historic mill.

Environmental company Sustainable Bakewell has received a £5,600 grant from Climate Change East Midlands to pay for a Hydro Engineering Study.

The study will be carried out at the Victoria Mill site, off Buxton Road.

The group hosted an event on Saturday at the Medway Centre to talk to residents about their plans.

They hope to create energy which will be used by National Grid and also generate money for the company, which has four directors and over 100 members, through Feed-in-Tariffs from the government.

Dan Zamoyski, chairman of Sustainable Bakewell, said: "We have been very fortunate to receive this full grant, in a very competitive field for these funds.

"Without this award we would not able to have this work carried out – and this study is the required next step.

"Since we were established in late 2008, it has been our desire to investigate the potential for Victoria Mill to become a viable micro-hydro electricity generation site."

Over 30 residents attended the meeting and took a tour along the River Wye and around the historic Saxon mill which was built in around 1800 was used for grinding corn until 1945.

The study funded by the grant is the third stage of a nine stage development at the mill.

Another public event will take place on Thursday, September 29 from 7pm to 9pm at Bakewell Town Hall.

The company is set to present the results from the engineering study and host a question and answer session.
